Development of a thermoelectric heating and cooling system with a high degree of efficiency

The German government plans to make the building stock almost climate-neutral by the middle of the century. By 2020, energy efficiency is to be improved by 20 % and CO2 emissions are to be reduced by 20 % compared to 1990 levels. The goal is the implementation of a nearly zero energy building stock in the new construction sector.

In order to meet these targets, in addition to highly insulated buildings, innovative and efficient heating and cooling systems based on regenerative energies are also required, which can provide the already considerably reduced but still remaining heating energy requirements of these buildings and can be brought to series production readiness quickly and cost-effectively. Heat pumps use environmental heat and can be used sensibly for this purpose. The disadvantage so far, however, is that centralised systems are used and therefore problems arise in the distribution of the heat, which can often only be solved by a certain amount of noise exposure.

The aim of this project is therefore to develop decentralised, electrothermal heat pumps based on Peltier elements that can be integrated directly into the façade in order to climatise the rooms to comfortable temperatures and distribute the generated heat. If sufficiently dimensioned, it should be possible, especially in new buildings, to use the technology as the sole heating and cooling system in the building.

The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy through the Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM) and is being carried out in cooperation with the company Panco GmbH. The project duration is two years and five months.
